Frequently Asked Questions about Square Dancing

What is Square Dancing? Modern American square dancing  consists of 4 couples (or 8 people) who form a square and execute calls (movements) from a caller.   The calls used are at the discretion of the caller.  All calls give the dancers a location to move to.  Square dance callers can either call what is known as "patter," which is the dancers reacting to what the caller calls.  There are also "singing calls," which put square dance moves to familiar music.  A typical night of square dancing will feature some of both.

What about the music? Is it country western? Modern American square dancing uses all types of music.  You may hear traditional country music, but you may also hear gospel, tunes from the 50's through today, rock and roll, and even some classical music.

What about the clothes? Are boots and petticoats still worn? You can wear them if you want to, and many do at least on occasion.  You're also welcome in prairie skirts or jeans and polo shirts or any type of clothing that is comfortable.  Shorts would be a rare exception, and it's difficult to dance in tight clothing that restricts movement.  Please remember that square dancing is a family activity

Who are square dancers?  Is there an age minimum? You will find that square dancers come from all walks of life.  Square dancers range in age from 8-98.  It's an activity that families can do together.  It's a great activity for singles and couples too.  All you do is walk to the music.

Are there any health benefits to square dancing? Yes, there are.  Square dancing has been endorsed by the American Heart Association.  At a typical dance you will walk 3-5 miles.  Square dancing provides a great low-impact  workout.  Square dancing has also been recommended by the Alzheimer's Association as being a good way to keep your mind sharp by remembering the calls.  It is one of the best ways to stay in shape.

Any other benefits? You will find that every dance is a party, and the cost of the dance is usually less then the cost of a movie ticket (it depends on what part of the country you're in).  You will find that square dancers are a friendly bunch of people that form a supportive social network.  Also, square dancing is called in English all around the world.  You can dance in about 50 countries.

How many calls do I have to learn and where do I learn them?  Depending on how you count, there are about 75 different calls in the beginning (which is called mainstream) program.  Click on the link for state dancing information.  We have provided information for all 50 states plus Washington D.C.,  and you can find a square dance club in your area to find out about lessons.  If you still need help to find a club in your area, drop us an email at: webmaster@squaredanceinfo.com and we'll try to find out the information for you.  There is a program called Square Dance ABC that is a walk-in dance.  It's for beginners; no experience is needed.  Check out our Square Dance ABC page to find a dance close to you.
